Hydro Turbine Design and Performance Analysis using Cloud-Native Simulation

Hydro Turbine Design and Performance Analysis using Cloud-Native Simulation

Watch On Demand

Hydro turbines typically operate off their best efficiency point (BEP) due to unsteady conditions triggered by variable demand and seasonality of flow. Turbine engineers need to develop performance curves for a turbine accounting for off-design conditions, while also optimizing the efficiency of existing and new designs to meet evolving ecological constraints and structural/mechanical considerations.  A CFD-driven analysis using SimScale’s cloud-native turbomachinery solver enables engineers to obtain turbine performance curves within minutes, thereby rapidly iterating on turbine configurations for optimal performance in a cost-effective manner.

In this webinar, you will learn how to set up a Francis turbine simulation in SimScale and generate its characteristic performance, by launching simultaneous runs on the cloud for different flow rates and RPMs.

Our experts demonstrate the workflow for evaluating cavitation effects in hydro turbines and walk you through post-processing the results. Regions of secondary flow and pressure gradients on the blade surfaces are also highlighted.
