About this workshop

Are you interested in the application of CFD in Formula Student and Formula SAE? Would you like to learn how to develop a car design using a revolutionary cloud-based simulation software?

SimScale and Formula Student Germany have joined forces to offer a free workshop about the application of CFD in Formula Student. During the 4-session course, students will receive a hands-on, interactive introduction to the fundamentals of race car aerodynamics and CFD from leading motorsport aerodynamics experts. Completing the course will enable participants to create precise CFD simulations of their car design and improve their own CFD methodology.

Submitting all four homework assignments will qualify you for a Certificate of Completion. All participants will get free access to SimScale with all the required simulation features.

Meet your Instructors

Session 1

Session 1 - Fundamentals of Aerodynamics

September 14th 2017 7:00 p.m. CEST / 1:00 p.m. EDT

The first session will cover the Fundamentals of Aerodynamics. Participants will learn about boundary layer and airfoil theory and how to apply this knowledge to design wings. Following this, participants will perform their very first CFD optimization of a Formula Student front wing.

Session 2

Session 2 - Complete Car Aerodynamics

September 21st 2017 7:00 p.m. CEST / 1:00 p.m. EDT

The second session will build on the knowledge acquired during the first session. Participants will learn about the fundamental concepts of Computational Fluid Dynamics and how to create a full car aerodynamics simulation.

Session 3

Session 3 - Development Strategies

October 5th 2017 7:00 p.m. CEST / 1:00 p.m. EDT

During the third session, participants will learn how to develop the aerodynamics of their car based on CFD. We will highlight the best practices for aerodynamics development and perform a live demonstration of a design improvement with the aid of simulation.

Session 4 - Design Process

October 12th 2017 7:00 p.m. CEST / 1:00 p.m. EDT

The final session will show the participants how to apply their new knowledge of aerodynamics and CFD to their own car design process. The focus will be very hands-on with topics like model cleanup and maintenance as well as CFD methodology and validation.
