How to Run CHT on a Sealed Enclosure?

Hello,
I am new to SimScale and have trouble understanding CHT analysis.

My project involves a sealed enclosure with powered electronics consisting of a low energy microcontroller, USB headers, battery management system, Relays, dc to dc, and a couple of 18650s. I have tried simplifying each piece to make it easier to simulate.

I am having trouble understanding what I am supposed to input for a closed inner region, understanding boundary conditions, and just overall a bit lost on setting up my model.

I understand that I want to find heat transfer from internal air to internal surfaces from convection as well as radiation heat transfer from the components to the internal walls, and radiation transfer of outer walls to surrounding environment.

Here is the link , SimScale

Any help is much appreciated.
Regards,
Luis

Hi Luis, this is Fillia

To begin with, it seems your closed inner region is created just fine!

I suggest you have a look at this Conjugate heat transfer in an electronics box as a start: Thermal Management Tutorial: Electronics Box Cooling | SimScale

This does not include radiation, but you can add this in your case:

(Radiation Behavior | Heat Modelling Documentation | SimScale)

More about this analysis type can be found here: Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis v2.0 | Analysis Types | SimScale

Finally, I see that you applied natural convection inlet/outlet on some of the faces of the solids. The Natural Convection Inlet/Outlet boundary condition is used to represent a boundary surface that is open to an external environment allowing the fluid to pass through in and out, but your fluid here is enclosed, right?

Best regards,
Fillia
