Hi…My name is Aimen. I’m a PhD student at Leeds Uni, UK.
I’m interested in using nanoparticles in solar absorption refrigeration systems.
most my research work is experimental. But I’m also interested in utilizing simulation and modelling tools for analysis and optimisation.
I’ve heard about SimScale from the Facebook. So, I’m trying to find out how can this tool help me in my research.
Also, I like to talk to friends, walk in outdoors and listen to music.

Hi,

My name is Dag Ole, and I feel a little like a fish out of water amongst the crowd here. I’m a programmer that is heading for disability as i’m having aspergers and it makes me function quite poorly in the workplace. I fell into this place as I’ve always had an interest for such things, and I like designing stuff and figuring things out. I found out about simscale through discovering the fusion 360 plugin for mac. I didn’t realize that simulation like this has become available for “normal folks”. What I would like to use simscale for eventually is to optimize design of my own tractor implements and other things I want to create. I have no experience with stuff like this and I’m kind of blown away that this kind of software is available now to people like me who don’t have a giant employer behind me footing the bill.

And absolutely no problem if you have no experience! We have plenty of resources that you can use to get familiar with our platform as well as simulation itself.

Most “projects” are mainly very loose ideas at this stage, just started to learn some welding and it opened up the possibilities for creation into a whole new level for me. I’ve always been better at ideas then follow through though, so time will tell what comes of it. I guess my main goal is in learning and discovering what is possible with a tool such as this. I think maybe the first thing I want to explore is the design of a fan for a snowblower to maximize throw distance and minimize clogging.

Hi, I’m Richard Macfarlane, a mechanical engineer and I’ve been contributing to Hyperloop for a few years. It’s fascinating technology, but no CFD studies have been published.

I’m hoping to use SimScale to study the flow between the pod and the tube. Initially the airflow will simply be faster because of the limited clearance, but as we approach 800 km/h there needs to be compression and transonic flow. CFD should help to decide the minimum tube size to avoid excess drag in the near-vacuum.

But I’m concerned that the project is over ambitious. I’m new to CFD, but looking forward to putting in the hard work to learn. Is this project achievable for an enthusiastic amateur, or is it a job for the seasoned professional?

That project is truly amazing and I hope that we can publish some nice post-processing data of your simulation. I would not say that you need to be a seasoned professional. Why not just start with some “simple” first simulations like in this paper: [Aerodynamics Hyperloop][link not available]? If you have any problems or questions you can ask in the Project Support section of this forum. I am sure that a lot of our users as well as our Power users are interested in the outcome of this simulation :wink:

Hi guys, thanks for your encouragement. It looks like I’ve some hard work ahead, no doubt there will be a few cries for help!

If you’re interested, I’ve published some Hyperloop ideas in (http://hyperloopdesign.net). There’s not much real info in the media, and the SpaceX student competition is not very relevant to transportation. Most images show a relatively large tube, which is not commercially feasible.

There is not much choice with the pod shape, which is basically a long cylinder for the passenger hull, but my focus will be to see how small we can get the tube, and what vacuum is required, to get reasonable drag. The tube size has a really big impact on the construction cost of the project.

My name is Muhammad Usman. I am from Pakistan and I am studying BS Mechanical Engineering (6th Semester) from “Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences” (PIEAS).
I believe that Simscale is a great tool for FEA and CFD, especially for engineering student because its reliable, low cost, and everything is on CLOUD!
I am currently working on Predicting Convection and Phase Change while Optimizing Thermal Packaging Design. This project will surely help me learn a lot and CHT skills. The project will also help me apply knowledge from my Heat Transfer Course (WHICH I AM CURRENTLY STUDYING) to a practical problem.
My expectations from this forum is to learn about computational analysis and mechanical engineering, to work on exciting real-life projects and to make a lot of new friends from all over the world.

Hello All,

My name is Morgan, I am a college student from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI. I am a member of the Formula Student (FSAE) team. On the team my position is the lead engineer/fabricator for the body and aerodynamic sub systems. I am working on creating simulations for our aerodynamic package on the car. Hello, Oh how I hope this all works out!

I’m Jim and I’ve been doing FEA since Solidworks/Cosmos first released and actually MSC Nastran even before that in the early 1990s. Now that I am approaching retirement I’ve thought I’d really miss the opportunity to do this kind of analysis when I can no longer have access to my work tools or afford Solidworks Simulation. Now this tool may be the key. I really have high hopes for all of this!

I’ve done mostly solid mechanics and structural dynamics and a little heat transfer and even less fluids. My first project here is fluids though and I’m ready and eager to learn how these tools differ from those with which I have experience.

Hi Jim @jtoney,

Oh the good old days of Cosmos, did you ever use Cosmos before they became integrated with Solidworks? FEA has definitely come a long way, I remember back then solving “large” problems around 20,000 DOFs and now I am running problems with over 2 million DOFs.
