Help Required for Motorcycle CFD

Hi SimScale,

I am struggling to carry out a CFD simulation on a motorcycle, I keep getting a velocity field diverging fault. I have followed the ‘Aerodynamics Simulation of Flow Around a Vehicle’ Tutorial in regards to the meshing and boundary conditions but appear to still be getting the issue within the wheel spokes.

I’ve now tried to refine the mesh and changed the base wall from a moving wall to a slip wall to try and run another Sim but already had a warning message prior to simulation run about further refinement.

If someone could take a look who has more experience than me it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards
Lee

Hi @LeeBing, thanks for posting on the forum and welcome to the SimScale Community :handshake:

From what I see, it seems like the issue is that your model is way too detailed and contains many small faces. You can see them near the diverging point:

The best solution in this case is to clean up the model and get rid of any unecessary details. Keep in mind any small face in your model, if not suppressed, will be captured by the mesh even if it doesn’t serve any particular purpose.

Here are some additional resources for reference on this topic:

Hi Igor,

Thank you for your help. I cleaned the model around the wheels and removed the rider as it was also causing issues with meshing.

I have now carried out a successful run but I cant seem to get any data from the post-processor solution fields? I am sure that I am doing something wrong as when looking at the intermediate results during simulation I was seeing good data.

Could you point me in the right direction again please!

Many thanks,
Lee

Ignore previous comment Igor,

I realised my iterations were set at 0. Now able to visualise results.

Thanks again for your help, lots of learning had on this one which has been good experience.

Many thanks,
Lee

Hi @LeeBing, no worries - common mistake! Cheers
