CFD faceted geometry / Self-intersection

Dear SimScale Support Team,

I am currently working on a CFD incompressible simulation in SimScale to analyze urban wind flow in Tokyo. However, I have been experiencing recurring errors during the mesh generation process due to self-intersections. Upon further inspection, I found that these issues mainly occur on surfaces containing very sharp or thin edges.

I have already tried various approaches, including adjusting the Advanced Settings and applying surface custom sizing. While these methods helped in some cases, they have not been sufficient to resolve all faceted face issues(especially face@11899) across the model.

Could you please advise on possible solutions or best practices to handle these problematic geometries and ensure a successful mesh generation? Any guidance or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to your response.

Hey @Suncat ,

Have you taken a look at this article yet: Surface Meshing Self-Intersection | Knowledge Base | SimScale ? It covers the most common causes for such errors during meshing.

Warning: Your model is really huge for a simple incompressible simulation, so will be the mesh. LBM / PWC is the preferred solver for such simulations.

A cleaner non-STL model will clearly be a better choice with a regular solver like incompressible simulation. However, it would also help to cut down the size of the model or to study a small part of it instead.

Let us know how it goes!

Cheers
