Hello everyone,
I am currently simulating a 3-blade H-Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) and observing unexpected behavior in my results.
As I increase the tip speed ratio (TSR), both the moment plots and the computed moment coefficients continuously increase, even at higher TSR values where they should begin to decline based on aerodynamic theory and the Betz limit. Instead of peaking and decreasing, the values keep rising.
I suspect there may be an issue in my setup rather than the physics itself.
For info, my parameters are 5 m/s wind speed along +y axis, rotation about -z axis. My rotor radius is 0.0486 m. I am testing TSR values, with increments of .5, with the intent to see which TSR value CP will peak at. Rotor height is 0.115 m.
I would appreciate guidance on checking:
-
Rotating zone configuration
-
Boundary conditions
-
Domain size or blockage effects
-
Moment calculation setup
-
Any common mistakes in VAWT simulations that could cause overprediction at high TSR
