Simulating rapid expansion of air

Hi everyone,
Is it possible to simulate the rapid expansion of air in a closed (but vented) container? Something similar to an explosion so as to see if the container is robust enough to handle the explosion. Thank you.

Hello!

This would be a pretty challenging problem to model, as it would involve transient, compressible flow. Resolving the blast pressure wave is essentially a discontinuity (similar to a shockwave), which typically requires specialty solvers (explicit) and meshers (adaptive mesh refinement), structured meshes.

Your last sentence seems to imply the structures are of most interest. Would a dynamic FEA run on the solid parts be more applicable to the question at hand?

Thanks for the reply, Nolan. Indeed the structures are of most interest. But I don’t have information about the kind of pressure and temperature that would arise from the explosion and doing dynamic FEA without this info would be tricky.
