Hi, i need to compare the disc brake materials (cast iron and aluminium) in terms of temperature , i don’t know how to setup and run the simulation.
please guide me.
My goal is to prove that aluminium will dissipate the heat well than that of cast iron(please ignore the strength comparison).
thanks in advance,

Hey @sekambaram,
welcome to SimScale. I think you need to a heat transfer simulation Link.
As far a i know, you need to do it like this, it is not possbile to simulate the whole process. Rotation of the disc, pressure by brake shoes and heat producing through friction.

Thank you verymuch…since am new to this analysis and simscale that input is not sufficient …
Hi @sekambaram,
Kindly go through the following link containing the heat transfer simulation of a disc brake simulated by @ROHIT_SR and reach out if you have have any query.

Hi @HamzaBaig, thank you, i already visited that project, it is clear except boundary conditions, the surface heat flux and convective heat flux was given. But it is not finished. The faces are not picked. and also I don’t know how to calculate those heat flux values. I tried few formulas by calculating braking power with kinetic energy . And dividing braking power with contack area of brake rotor to get heat flux. Is this the right way?
please clarify.
Thanks,

@sekambaram kindly refer to disc brake design section of some books on machine design for more information about the energy stored, heat dissipated during braking.
