Climate-Smart Hospital
About this project
Climate-smart is a collective term that includes both mitigation or sustainability measures and climate change resilience interventions (World Bank Group, 2017). Related to this, a green and healthy hospital is one that promotes public health by continuously reducing its environmental impact and ultimately eliminating its contribution to the burden of disease (Milan, 2018). Elements of climate-friendly hospitals 1) Energy Efficiency 2) Green Building Design 3) Alternative Energy Generation 4) Transportation - encourage walking and cycling to the facility 5) Food - provide sustainably grown local food for staff and patients 6) Reduce, re-use, recycle, compost - employ alternatives to waste incineration 7) Water Conservation Designing climate-smart hospitals will also complement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Also, the reducing of energy-use is seen to aid the economic recovery plan for the worldwide impact of COVID-19 (Bellero, 2020).
