The purpose is to demonstrate that both heating and cooling can be achieved by structuring layered materials with voids, either by progressively increasing size for cooling or by incrementally decreasing size for heating. The basic principle of Structural Heating and Cooling is that decreasing volume increases pressure and energy generating heat, whereas expanding volume decreases pressure and energy resulting in cooling!
