Evaluate thermal fatigue and mechanical stress in a piston. Geometry: • Simplified piston geometry (cylindrical head with wrist pin hole). • Combustion chamber surface area: 0.02 m². Material: Aluminum Alloy (E = 70 GPa, ν = 0.33, k = 160 W/m•K). Boundary Conditions: • Combustion heat flux: 1.5 MW/m² on the piston crown. • Convective cooling (h = 50 W/m²•K, T_ambient = 80°C). • Mechanical load: 5 kN axial force from connecting rod. Analysis Steps (Simulia/Abaqus): 1. Transient thermal analysis (10-second heating/cooling cycle). 2. Sequentially coupled thermo-mechanical stress analysis. 3. Use symmetry to reduce model size. Parameters to Vary: Material (Aluminum vs. Steel). Deliverables: • Temperature distribution over time. • Heat flux vectors in critical regions. • Cyclic stress amplitude for fatigue life prediction.
