EV manufacturers need to design for a wide range of battery operating conditions and cooling strategies under the tight deadlines dictated by the growing requests of the electric mobility market. Designing the right solutions, while reducing the need for lengthy and costly physical prototyping, calls for modern simulation tools that don’t require time-intensive manual setup and are not hindered by computational limitations of traditional CAE tools. By adopting simulation tools born in the cloud, the full simulation workflow is shortened from days, sometimes weeks, to hours enabling engineers to explore the full design space and reduce the need for testing.

In this session at the 2022 Virtual Conference On EV Engineering from Charged Electric Vehicles Magazine, we explored the thermal performance of a liquid-cooled battery module by Rimac using cloud-native engineering simulation. Alexander Fischer, co-founder & product manager at SimScale, investigates how the change in different design parameters influences the temperature of battery cells inside the module with the goal of increasing battery life by maintaining an optimal operating temperature distribution. By simulating in the cloud, engineers can run hundreds of design iterations in parallel with the desired accuracy and get design insight in a timely fashion.
