DIY 3D Printer Workshop

Learn how to improve a RepRap 3D Printer with engineering simulation

About This Workshop

The SimScale DIY 3D printer workshop series enable students, 3D printing enthusiasts, and professionals to learn how to use engineering simulation for developing and improving the design of a 3D printer.

During three workshop sessions, participants will learn the fundamentals of engineering simulation and will expand their knowledge by improving the design of the RepRap 3D printer. Every session comes with an optional homework assignment. Submitting all three homework assignments will qualify you for a Certificate of Completion.

There is no prior knowledge or software required to join this free workshop series. All participants will get free access to SimScale including all simulation features.

Session 1 - Optimizing the heat distribution of the extruder

June 21st 2017 5:00 p.m. CEST / 11:00 a.m. EDT

The first session will introduce you to thermal simulations. Beside a crisp introduction to SimScale and engineering simulation / CAE in general, the participants will create a simulation of the heat distribution within the extruder from scratch and take a design optimization decision based on the results of the analysis.

Session 2

Session 2 - Cooling and Thermal Management

June 28th 2017 5:00 p.m. CEST / 11:00 a.m. EDT

The second session of the 3D Printing Workshop is about the role of cooling and thermal management. Besides learning about the fundamentals of convectional heat transfer and fluid dynamics, you will set up a fluid flow simulation to optimize the operating mode of the fan.

Session 3

Session 3 - Frame Vibrations

July 6th 2017 5:00 p.m. CEST / 11:00 a.m. EDT

The third session will introduce you to solid mechanic simulations. Participants will learn about the fundamentals of machine dynamics and create a modal simulation to identify eigenfrequencies and the associated modal displacements of frame.
