About this Workshop

How can aerodynamics help athletes achieve top performance? You’ll learn about this and more during the SimScale Sports Aerodynamics Workshop!

Participants will receive a hands-on, interactive introduction to sports aerodynamics and will learn from top simulation experts how to leverage the free, cloud-based SimScale platform to predict and optimize the performance of sport devices. Every session comes with an optional homework assignment that will help you put the knowledge you gained into practice.

Session 1

Session 1 - Ski jumping

February 27th 2017 4:00 p.m. CET / 11:00 a.m. EST

In the first session of our Sports Aerodynamics Workshop, we will focus on the aerodynamics of ski jumping. After discussing the necessary physical principles, we will examine the optimal posture in the flight phase. In addition, participants will get introduced to the basics of computational fluid dynamics.

Session 2

Session 2 - Racing bicycle

March 6th 2017 4:00 p.m. CET / 11:00 a.m. EST

Modern racing bikes have sophisticated aerodynamics, which use complex interactions to reduce the drag as much as possible. Within the second session we will examine the influence of the rim size on the full bike aerodynamics and related modelling techniques for side wind studies and rotating parts.

Session 3

Session 3 - Flight of a soccer ball

March 13th 2017 4:00 p.m. CET / 11:00 a.m. EST

During the last session, we will investigate the influence of aerodynamics on the flight behavior of a soccer ball. This includes the historical development of soccer balls as well as future potentials for design optimization.
