This project focuses on the sustainable retrofitting of the Ratmalana Post Office, a historic government building in Sri Lanka, to improve its energy efficiency, reduce its carbon footprint, and enhance occupant comfort while preserving its architectural and cultural identity. Many government buildings in Sri Lanka, including the Ratmalana Post Office, were constructed decades ago using conventional methods such as brick walls, reinforced concrete frames, clay tile roofs, and timber joinery. While durable, these buildings no longer meet modern sustainability standards. They consume excessive energy due to high cooling demands, lack effective daylighting and ventilation, and rely on carbon-intensive construction materials, resulting in increased operational costs and environmental impacts.
