The helix antenna in the end-fire or axial mode presents a single main lobe along the axis of the helix. This mode is achieved when the Diameter length D is close to λ0 and the turn spacing S is close to λ0/4. For a long helix, the polarization is close to circular in the main beam. In a first order model, with a wire radius close to 0.002λ0, the radiation resistance of the end-fire helix oscillates with frequency around 140Ω, while the reactance arond -50Ω. If the wire radius increases, the radiation resistance decreases while the reactance reduces slightly. Local modifications at the feed point such as pitch smoothing, insertion of metal plates, on-axis feed, enable the direct matching to 50Ω.
