The purpose of this test case is to validate the mean surface pressure on a building with balconies, using the Lattice Boltzmann model for three wind directions.

The purpose of this project is to use experimental results from the Architectural Institute of Japan to validate CFD results gained from SimScale. The case being validated is Case E, which consists a complex of buildings with simplified geometry. Many scenarios are presented in Case E, The scenarios used to validate the SimScale platform were the North, East, South and Westerly winds for the after construction scenario.

The SimScale CFD results were compared to the experimental results and found to have good correlation. Some underprediction was seen in the k-epsilon models in the strong wind regions and underprediction in the wake regions, but is a known trait of the K-epsilon model and is acceptable and should be considered when evaluating results.

This validation focuses on validating the moment coefficients using experimental results obtained by RWDI in their wind tunnel tests, published in the paper (Calin Dragoiescu, Jason Garber and Suresh Kumar, 2006) where results were published using two techniques, a high-frequency force balance (HFFB) and high-frequency pressure integration (HFPI) which uses tap points. Both showing mostly good agreement between the two, with HFFB expected to be more accurate.

This project uses an Incompressible (LBM) analysis type to evaluate the aerodynamics of a truck through a transient simulation.

The CAARC building is a validation case that has for many years been used to validate CFD codes. This case has been shown in the past validating both URANS and LES turbulence models, where the trend has been that RANS/URANS has predicted the windward facade well but not predicted the sides and Leeward facades. In contrast, LES has shown a good agreement with experimental results, however, there is still in general, an over-prediction for the sides and leeward facade, and a worse prediction on the windward facade. In this project we look at SimScales LBM implementation, PaceFish from Numeric Systems, and how well it performs using Hybrid models, K-omega SST DDES, and k-omega SST IDDES models. These models use wall models based upon K-omega SST but then transition to the highly accurate LES model further from the wall.

Transient wind comfort study on Gangnam District

The aim of the project is to validate the vortex shedding behavior of the cylinder with Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approach using SimScale's new Lattice Boltzmann based solver Pacefish. The results are compared with the experimental results from research paper and are in congruence with it. The parameters used for validation are the Mean radial pressure distribution over the cylinder surface and the vortex shedding profile.

Vegetation and trees affecting wind / pedestrian wind comfort

This project shows the effect of the side wind on different wheels designs.

For this project, we simulated two different scenarios, one using a model without the integration of trees around the park and near the building, and the second including the effect of these trees. The purpose of this was to find out if planting trees around urban high-rise buildings can be an effective strategy to mitigate the undesirable effects of airflow, leading to wind discomfort at the pedestrian level.
