What is Passive Species and what is it used for?
What is Passive Species?
Passive scalar source can be considered as a fluid with contaminants. It is assumed that contaminants are present in low concentration, therefore they have no effect on thermopysical properties of the fluid. If multiple slightly identical fluids (same density, viscosity, and thermal conductivity) are present within the same domain, diffusive interraction of the fluid streams can be simulated, using passive scalar sources. As an example, the following scenarios can be simulated:
- Propagation of smoke from a fire
- Air quality in a subway station
- Mean age of a fluid
