Winglet - supression of wingtip vortices


Wingtip vortices are generated from aircraft wings due to span-wise difference in lift generation. These vortices cause destabilization and loss of performance in the form of reduction in lift. In this study we demonstrate that winglets can be effective measures to reduce the strength of wingtip vortices.

With the simulation, we demonstrate the following:

  1. Wingtip vortices in wings with and without winglets. The latter case has pronounced vortex formation which we can observe to be developing at the wingtip:

  1. Wings with winglets generate larger lift than those without, when all other parameters are the same.
