I created a new simulation project called 'footballAerodynamics_handout':

Two cases were simulated:

  1. Sea level: Air with density 1.225 kg/m3.
  2. Bogota: Air with density 0.960 kg/m3.


Sea Level:


Drag = Pressure force x + Viscous force x = 6.41 + 0.61 = 7.02


Side Force = Pressure force z + Viscous force z = 4.52 - 0.05 = 4.47


Bogota:


Drag = Pressure force x + Viscous force x = 5.02 + 0.48 = 5.50


Side Force = Pressure force z + Viscous force z = 3.54 - 0.04 = 3.50


Observation: in higher altitudes (lower air density), both the drag and the side forces decrease.


Change:


(drag_Bogota - drag_ref) / drag_ref = (5.50 - 7.02) / 7.02 = - 21.7 %

(side_Bogota - side_ref) / side_ref = (3.50 - 4.47) / 4.47 = - 21.7 %


Observation: The change in both the drag and the side forces is the same.
