Validation Project : Flow Analysis of a Butterfly valve

This project validates the performance parameters for flow through a Butterfly valve via the steady-state Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach and K-Omega SST turbulence model. The geometry for this study is a discus shaped Butterfly valve at different opening angles as depicted in the figure below.

The domain was meshed using the Snappy-Hex-Mesh on the SimScale platform. The resulting meshes consists of about 2.8-3.4 Million cells and a sample is shown in the figure below.

The simulation analysis the Flow coefficient, Cv and Torque coefficient, Ct over a range of opening angles. The validation results are presented in detail in the documentation (see link above).

The results show how numerical simulations can be used to predict valve performance in the design phase. Subsequently, this could help in optimizing the product for improved valve designs with increased efficiency and performance. The shown post processing (on Paraview) gives the contours of the velocity and the flow field with pressure distribution on the valve surface.
