I created a new simulation project called 'Drone_WS_6_foil_tip_vortex':

  • investigate the effect of a winglet on the wing tip
  • simulation for two geometries (AoA=5°):
    Case 1. without tip winglet and
    Case 2. with a tip winglet
  • steady state aerodynamics, with k-\omega SST turbulence model
  • inlet velocity u_\inf= 20m/s, 25m/s, 30m/s 35m/s and 40m/s

Overall forces results, for the two configurations, are shown above: the winglet effectively increases lift (compare also the pressure distribution around the tip for the two cases, in the following pictures).

Case 1. No tip winglet, pressure on the foil and iso-helicity surface for H=1000 m/s2

Case 2. With tip winglet, pressure on the foil and iso-helicity surface for H=1000 m/s2

Helicity definition:
