CFD particle analysis with non-shelled model?

I am following this tutorial to perform CDF analysis on a cooling design for a 3D printer.

the process in the tutorial works fine. But… I would like to know if it is possible to do this type of analysis with a surface / non-shelled geometry. As shelling complex surfaces takes lost of time it would be much more efficient to simulate just the relevant colling pathway, rather than a fully shelled valid solid.

Is that possible ??? The project is public below…

Actually CFD needs a 3D solid domain for the simulation. So, there is no way around it, a solid model is needed.
