Young’s Modulus

Young’s modulus or elastic modulus is a mechanical property of linear elastic solid materials. It defines the relationship between stress and strain in a material and is given by:

\[E = \frac {\sigma}{\epsilon}\]

where, ‘\(E\)‘ is the Young’s modulus of the material, ‘\(\sigma\)‘ and ‘\(\epsilon\)‘ are the stress and strain respectively.

When a load is applied on the material, the material deforms. The material is called elastic if it returns back to its original shape after the load is removed. A constant Young’s modulus means that the relation between stress and strain is linear.A material is said to be very rigid if the Young’s modulus is very high.

Young’s Modulus has a units of pressure or stress, since the strain is dimensionless quantity.
