Yu Liu works as a professional scientist in a multinational chemical company that specializes in vitro diagnostic tools using microfluidics, or microfluidic technology. It is one of the world’s top chemicals manufacturers with over 40 years of experience in the industry.
The collaboration between SimScale and Yu’s team started last summer. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Yu and learn more about how SimScale is helping them with their ongoing project in the chemical field.
What was the motivation behind looking for a CAE tool?
In order to speed up the optimization of our product design for a chemical application, we have been looking for effective tools that can offer insights and actionable information. CAE is particularly attractive because it relieves the burden of making costly physical prototypes and can potentially reduce the duration of design iteration cycle.
How did you come to find SimScale?
One of our scientists reviewed several options and found that SimScale provides a service that fits our technical requirements and budget.
Did you have any experience with simulations before?
We have some experience with finite-volume and finite-element simulation. The strength of SimScale is reflected in its balance between performance and cost. SimScale might not have the most features available on the market, but it offers enough functionality to perform non-trivial simulations without hefty expenses.
What kind of simulations are you working on with SimScale?
We are mostly interested in multi-phase fluid dynamics simulations.

What was the biggest challenge you faced at the beginning, and how did you overcome it?
It took us some time to learn the features of SimScale to make the most use of it. However, we received customer coaching, customized for our projects and thus very relevant to our unique requirement. In the end, the coaching session provides a good starting point to run our simulations. With the help of SimScale’s engineers, our models could be validated within a short period of time. With the confidence gained in these coaching sessions, we then went further and modified the simulation models to get more results.
What will be the most important long-term benefits for you and your company of using SimScale?
The experience with SimScale demonstrates the feasibility of performing CAE without requiring substantial investment in resources. We also gained insights and guidance from the simulation result obtained from the SimScale platform.
How would you sum up your experiences with SimScale in the past few months?
SimScale provides a flexible platform to perform engineering simulations. Without a lot of prior experience in simulation, we learned from SimScale how to set up simulation models for validation and proceeded further with the knowledge gained. SimScale seems to be an enabling and also accessible technology to us.
